What is hydration? It is consuming enough water for your body to be able to perform all its necessary functions.
Your body depends on water to survive. Every cell, tissue and organ in your body needs water to function properly.
For example, your body uses water to maintain its temperature, eliminate waste, and lubricate your joints. Drinking enough water through proper hydration is necessary for good general health.
What is Hydration?
Signs that you are dehydrated include muscle spasms, confusion, fast heart rate and headaches.
In order for your body to return to its normal state, you have to replace the missing water or hydrate with water rich foods or electrolytes.
One way to know that you are no longer dehydrated is that the signs of dehydration will disappear fairly quickly.
What is Hydration in Chemistry?
In chemistry, hydration reaction is fundamentally a chemical reaction where a substance combines with water.
However, in organic chemistry, the hydration reaction is one in which water is added to an unsaturated substrate (typically an alkyne or an alkene).
This type of reaction is how industrial processes make isopropanol, ethanol, and 2-butanol.
Now we know the answer to “what is hydration”, let’s get some facts and dispel some hydration myths at the same time.
The list below are of hydration facts that may surprise you. However, they also represent some things you probably should know about staying hydrated.
Keep them in mind when you start to get hot, dehydrated and want to understand what is going on.
1. Feeling Tired Might Just Be Dehydration.
In fact, do you know that even a 3% drop in water level can cause brain fog (i.e. fuzzy thinking) as well a slower metabolism. If this doesn’t convince you then consider another study by the University of Connecticut’s Human Performance Laboratory.
The research from this lab shows that even a 1.5% water loss can lead to reduced cognitive function, more incidents of headaches and fatigue in both men and women.
2. The Pain of Thirst is Real.
Yes, we are hungry, but do you know that we also have thirst pain? Often we can not rely on a dry mouth to tell ourselves that we need a bit more H2O. Chronic joint pain, headaches and stomach ulcers can often mean d-e-h-y-d-r-a-t-i-o-n. Water is needed to transport acidic waste away from the cells but when we are dehydrated, this waste is not carried away, causing the nerves to interpret acidity as pain.
3. Asthma and Allergies Can Be Linked to Dehydration.
Dr. Batmanghelidj discovered that when the body is dehydrated, histamine begins to ration water. This in turn increases the histamine and allergic response and reduces immunity.
4. “8 Cups of Water A Day” is 100% Not True.
It is something individual, since the water requirement varies from person to person.
The amount of water we need depends on a number of factors, including our size, activity, stress, climate or temperature, and our diet.
A good principle is to take your body weight (in pounds) and divide it by 2. This is the number of ounces of water you should drink each day.
For example, if you weigh 150 pounds, you will need 75 ounces of water per day. Divide this by 8 to get the amount of 8 ounce jars you should drink. If this is too complicated use a simple How Much Water Should I Drink A day Calculator.
5. City Water Can Affect Your Digestion.
City water is chlorinated to eliminate pathogens and disinfect water. Chlorine is a skin irritant (remember to apply a shower filter if you have eczema or dry skin), pro-oxidant and destroyer of friendly microflora and stomach acid.
When our friendly microflora is destroyed, we can experience tension and slow digestion, and if our stomach can not produce as much stomach acid and enzymes as it should, digestion can be completely uncomfortable.
If you find it hard to stay hydrated, here are some tips that can help you:
- Have a bottle of water during the day.
- To reduce the cost and expenses of doing this, use a reusable water bottle and regularly fill it up with filtered water.
- If you do not like the taste of water, try adding a lime or lemon slice to your drink.
- Drink water before, during and after exercise.
- When you are hungry, drink water. Thirst is often confused with hunger. True hunger is not quenched by drinking water.
- If you have trouble remembering to drink water, drink according to a schedule. For example, drink water when you get up, at breakfast, lunch and dinner, and when you go to bed. Or drink a small glass of water at the beginning of each hour.
- Drinking water can also contribute to a healthy weight loss plan.
- Drink water when you go to a restaurant. It will keep you hydrated and the best part is that it is also free.
Why is Hydration Important?
Water is life.
You need water to eliminate toxic substances, produce digestive enzymes, maintain healthy skin, hair and organs, and help your body absorb vitamins, minerals and natural sugars.
Liquids that are not pure water do not behave like water in your body and do not meet your fluid needs like water.
Coffee, tea, alcohol, soft drinks (or any other caffeine-containing beverage) do not count.
So always stay hydrated. If you find that water is too boring then try these delicious fruit infused water recipes.
