Do NOT Buy Until You Read These Best Water Bottle Reviews

Water bottle reviews… Mirror mirror on the wall, which is the best water bottle of them all?

Hydration is one of the most basic human needs and the answer to the “best water bottle” question is a tricky one. This is because what is “best” will depend on the situation, your taste, specific needs etc.

This blog article is loosely based on the rigorous tests conducted at OGL (Outdoor Gear Lab). OGL conducted their very own water bottle reviews. They took 10 of the most popular bottles available on the market.

Then put the bottles through 3 months, yes that’s right 3 months of testing!

They used the bottles for everything from mountain biking to rock climbing and yoga exercise to office use.

MyTapScore Home Water TestThey also put the bottles to test at their labs. This was in order to be able to determine the quality of the taste. As well as how well it retains flavours as well as how easy it is to clean.

After doing all of that they found a winner as well as a bunch of top picks. This trusted credible source has already done a lot of the heavy lifting. Consequently, it would be crazy for me to try to repeat the study.

However, what I will do in this “water bottle reviews” article is to go over their results. Compare them with other genuine customer reviews from places like Amazon.

I will triangulate that against my own experiences with the products. And then give you the ultimate guide to getting the best water bottle money can buy.MyTapScore Inforgraphic

First, Cool Reusable Water Bottles WITH Plastic?

Water bottles with plastic bodies are the most popular form of re-usable bottles on the market today. They are the most commonly seen type of water storage device. You are more likely to get them at campsites, the gym and rock climbing crags.

Here’s the deal…

It makes a lot of sense when you consider that plastic is versatile, lightweight and usually inexpensive. Plastic is pliable and can easily be formed into different shapes.

Heart WaterThis makes it ergonomically and aesthetically pleasing while also being durable. It can take all the knocks or/and drops that you can put it through.

Plastic is also see-through, which means you can see how much water you have consumed.

Oh yeah, let’s also not forget that you can get plastic in almost every colour imaginable.

As a result it is of no surprise that most water bottles are made with plastic but as you will discover in the following section, a preference for plastic bottles could be more problematic to your health then you might realise.

Note that unless otherwise stated, these bottles are NOT the same as water filter bottles that actively work to clean and purify the water. These bottles only work as a “water storage” device so you need to make sure the water you put inside has already been filtered or comes from a clean source.

What is BPA?

If you prefer using plastic bottles remember to check that it is not at risk of leaking harmful BPA’s. What is BPA? It is the short acronym for bisphenol-a, which is used in the plastic creation process and could be hazardous to health.

Why does this matter?

BPA has been linked to many health issues, including cancer.

The results below will provide you with as much information about any potential BPA risk that any product might have. The aim is to provide you with all the information so that you can make an informed choice.

This is an actual water filter bottle (not just “water storage” like some of the others on this list) that is portable and I personally think that doing this makes a better investment because it is serving 2 functions (having water at hand and filtering it at the same time) instead of 1 (simply storing water).

There is a good chance that you’ve already seen this bottle as it is super popular and has a very distinctive eye-catching design that shows off its carbon filter and silicon caps. The bottle doesn’t just look pretty it is very effective at removing impurities and nasties from water.

Most water bottles are simply glorified “water storage” devices however, this BRITA Fill & Go doesn’t just “store water” but actively filters it to! It is ideal for filtering tap water because the bottle removes things like chalk, chlorine and other impurities.

Why Plastic Water Bottles Are BAD For You

There is one burning issue that I alluded to earlier in this article and that is of course the thorny issue of BPA.

All the bottles mention so far are certified BPA-free and some of them don’t even contain any plastics because they are made from glass or steel.

Avoid Plastic Poison: What you must check before you buy bottle water

However, just because a bottle is BPA-free doesn’t mean that it’s free of EA (Estrogenic Activity also found in plastics) which is another potential harmful compound when it enters the human body.

BPA Free Water Bottles?

Unfortunately, the scientific evidence in this area is confusing and contradictory to say the least. In light of this, the conservative approach would be to go for glass or stainless steel.

Yes, glass and stainless steel bottles might be more expensive. And more likely to break (especially in the case of glass).

But in light of all the potential health risks I would say this is worth it if BPA or EA is something that you have even the slightest concern over.

How To Reduce BPA Exposure?

If after all of this, you decide that you are still happy using a plastic water bottle then I recommend the following practices:

  • Don’t rely on your dishwasher to properly clean your bottle. Always hand wash it to make sure it is completely hygienic and sanitary.
  • Don’t heat up your plastic water bottle in the microwave.
  • Do not leave your plastic bottle in the sun as this could leave to UV exposure.
  • Do not use the plastic bottle to consume hot beverages and liquids.
  • Throw the bottle away if it becomes badly scratched, discoloured or has lots of signs of wear and tear.

Final thoughts…

This ‘best water bottle reviews’ blog is loosely based on an extensive 3-month study conducted by trusted and credible sources like Outdoor Gear Lab that reviewed and tested the most popular water bottles on the market.

Mr-Water-Geek-On-LaptopMy study starts where their one stops in that I have also taken into account genuine reviews and looked at all the available information online with regards to possible BPA and EA contamination.

The conclusion is that if you are in any way concerned about BPA and EA contamination then you should opt for a glass or steel bottle.

If for whatever reason you prefer plastic then make sure you don’t put it in the microwave, use it for hot water/beverages, leave it in the sun or continue using it after it has become scratched and discoloured.
