But the real question is: does alkaline water really deserve all of this hype?
The “alkaline” part refers to its pH level. The pH number is what measures the level acidity or alkalinity on a scale of 0 to 14. Something that has a pH of 1 means it is very acidic, 7 means that it is neutral and something with the highest pH of 14 means it is extremely alkaline.
High pH water (that is above 8) means that it has a higher pH than everyday tap water and regular drinking water. This is what leads some people to suggest that this type of water may be able to neutralize the acid in your body.
However, pH alone is not enough to determine the quality of alkalinity. This is because aside from alkaline minerals, this type of water should also have negative oxidation reduction potential (ORP). The level of ORP will let you know if the water can act as a pro- or antioxidant. In very simple terms, the more negative the ORP value, the more antioxidizing it is.
