Some experts also found that it could slow the progression of rheumatoid arthritis and alleviate some of its symptoms. Rheumatoid arthritis is at its core a condition that causes inflammation in the joints.
What Is Hydrogen Water?
Hydrogen water is simply water infused with hydrogen gases. Hydrogen gas acts as an anti-inflammatory agent and has antioxidant activity. These are the features that make it good for you.
But let’s be certain, the science is clear on this. The healthiest thing you can drink is water. It is free of sugar, salt and clear of chemicals.
Specifically chemicals that damage and alter your cells. All this is the case so long as the water is contaminant and toxin free.
If H2O and hydrogen is so good for you, then consuming more hydrogen water is even better – right?
Well more and more beverage companies are counting on this to be the case. So-called “hydrogen water” – water infused with hydrogen gas are increasingly popular. It doesn’t come cheap either.
This type of water typically costs $11 per or you can buy tablets that dissolve in your water to produce the hydrogen content for around $60.
There are also machines costing $2,500-5,000 for people that want to do it themselves at home.
But let’s see if the claims actually stack up by looking at the science behind hydrogen water.
The Science
The idea behind hydrogen water is not pure marketing. Research on mice shows that hydrogen acts as an effective disease-fighting antioxidant and that drinking hydrogen water can potentially prevent arteriosclerosis (hardening of the arteries).
Similar studies in rats show that supplementing hydrogen also had anti-inflammatory properties.
This indicates that hydrogen water can effectively carry hydrogen to damaged cells.
One study on humans found that hydrogen water could be a “therapeutic and and preventative strategy for metabolic syndrome (e.g., obesity, insulin resistance, hypertension).”
In an 8-week study observing 20 people who were given drinking water containing a metallic stick to produce hydrogen-rich water. Researchers saw a 39% increase in antioxidants, an increase in HDL (i.e. good cholesterol) and a decrease in total cholesterol.
That’s promising news, but very limited data.
We’d need to see a study done on a much larger sample size over a longer period of time before brands can claim antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
And that doesn’t even touch whether it is worth shelling out $3 per 11 ounces that you are advised to consume several times a day. In contrast, you can get typically an 11-ounce bottle of Fiji Natural Artesian Water for $1.32.
The Reality
The recommended dosage of hydrogen water does not have any federal regulation and there is no way to asses how valid the claims are.
“We do not know anything about the dosage or frequency of drinking with which you need to use hydrogen water to achieve health benefits,” says Robin Foroutan, nutritionist spokesman and Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
Regardless of whether the real miracle does the business or not, we do not know how much it means for your health.
The good news?
If you want to really try hydrogen water then try it consequence free, especially as there are no negative hydrogen water side effects.
So far, the only thing the FDA has concluded is that hydrogen water is “GRAS” (Generally Recognized As Safe).
My recommendation to you at the moment? Try it instead of OR along side your normal water intake for a short period of time to see its positive effects.

The daily consumption of water rich in hydrogen is a potentially new therapeutic strategy to improve the quality of life.
The consumption of water rich in hydrogen can reduce the biological response to oxidative stress.
However, the research still needs more data and there is almost no FDA guidance on these claims.
So, what is the answer?
You may be tempted to drink the same water as celebrities but remember that it will not make you as attractive as Blake Lively or as buff as Zac Efron.
The good news is that ALL the studies show that hydrogen water does NOT do you any form of harm. So why not try it out for yourself?
I personally think it’s far better than drinking tap water. Especially when you think about all the hormones and heavy metals that lurk in tap water.

You’ve asked the right question to allow me to say that the main metric you want to look at when evaluating hydrogen water is the concentration of dissolved molecular hydrogen in the water you’re about to drink. ORP (oxidation-reduction potential), which is often incorrectly used as a proxy for H2 concentration, is pretty hard to measure as a function of pH, H2 concentration, and temp given the ORP meters used and their error bars. In other words, ignore ORP. pH is an indicator of how much ‘stuff’ is in pure water: the higher the number, the more ‘stuff’ (typically minerals – calcium, magnesium, and sodium – in filtered water). Added H2 also slightly increases pH value of water. RO water or distilled water (water that is pure H2O) shouldn’t have a pH lower than ~6.5-ish. Drinking water with a pH <7 is not bad for you. But it does taste bitter to most people.
Going back to hydrogen – based on the papers I've read, the ranges of "effective doses" vary based on the hypothesis the researchers were testing for. The most commonly used concentrations of molecular hydrogen are 0.5 to >2 ppm. Note that at standard conditions (1 atm/14.7psi, 25 degrees C/77 degrees F) dissolved molecular hydrogen reaches saturation at 1.6ppm.
The main thing to be concerned about is that long-term effects of using hydrogen water haven’t really been studied so that’s a risk to be aware of. The FDA approves consumption of hydrogen water by labeling it GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe). I’d recommend talking to your doctor and see if they are aware of any potential long-term risks. The longest study I am aware of lasted 24 weeks/6 months. The increasing body of work that has proved the effectiveness of hydrogen water shouldn’t take away from this fact. To answer your other questions: most hydrogen generating products for drinking water use the same type of electrolysis tech – electrolysis with a proton-exchange membrane – to generate hydrogen. You post data on the generators, but it isn’t complete. It’s good to know the amount of alkalinity, but what is the level of hydrogenation? I read of a “clinical trial” that produced some significant health benefits, but the hydrogen level was 15ppm and the trial subjects drank 0.5L daily. Yet I see this stuff for sale with a mere 1.5ppm. Also, most of the hydrogen generators on the market seem to produce anywhere from 1.0 to 1.6ppm. (One company advertises 1600ppb which sounds great until one realizes that it’s another way of saying 1.6ppm.

There are some devices like the UCE-13 Plus that can provide up to 1.8+ ppm molecular hydrogen (on top of providing filtered water, alkaline water etc.) but it is extremely expensive.

So I think it’s unlikely that something like this will leach metals into the water because there are lots of laws in place to make sure that this is not the case and it would be breaking the law if it did.

There are two water bottle size machine, one made in China the other USA.Do they work or is it a gimmick? They’re very small. I would trust the USA version more than the Chinese due to quality of the metal?

I use my Berkey to filter all my water first then I use the filtered water in my Gosoit to hydrogenate the water (yes it works) and it is the best thing I have got my family hooked on. It does make a difference as my family members each have had a different experience after drinking a large bottle of hydrogenated water. I’ve tried Cymbiotika brand of molecular hydrogen, it is similar to dr mer cola tablets. Dissolved it in spring water. Yes, there was a strange somewhat dizzy feeling upon drinking it, it made my ear pressure feel funny too. I wasn’t sure if it was from the magnesium or malic acid or what. The odd unpleasant feeling subsided after a few minutes. And it gave some energy boost but I did not like the acidic residue in the water. I have also tried Hfactor hydrogen water in a pouch and I did not have any trouble with it, only good energy feeling.
Be clear. The acid alkaline balnce is delicate. as is hydrogen level in the body. Be carful. Hydrogen is a very volitile gas. It may be beneficial in small amounts but I worry what high levels could do. Remeber balance is key to all aspects of healt. Too low acidity in the G.I. tract could halt or slow digestion. Too much hydrogen can cause gas and dyspepsia (heartburn). Also only hydrogenate alkaline filtered water or clean spring water. Hydrogenating tap water can create a number of unwanted chemical reactions.

The only issue with boiling water as a method of filtration is that it’s not effective if the source water is contaminated with something like debris (bits and pieces) or a liquid substance.

Can this water expire and lose benefits?

Unopened air tight hydrogen water does not expire if stored in glass.
However, the chemicals from a plastic bottle may start to leach into the water after a certain amount of time so always follow the expiration provided by the manufacturer.
Otherwise Hydrogen water (that is not sealed) can maintain its antioxidant properties for up to 8 hours.
